Vigilance work and fatigue
Vigilance work requires sustained attention — monitoring displays, traffic, plant status, track conditions, or patient observations over extended periods. Fatigue can reduce the ability to detect change, respond promptly, and maintain accurate awareness — especially during night work or monotonous tasks.
What vigilance work means
Section titled “What vigilance work means”Vigilance tasks share features that can elevate fatigue risk:
- Sustained attention over hours without natural task variation
- Low stimulation — quiet control rooms, long motorway sections, repetitive monitoring
- Safety-critical observation — where a missed signal or delayed response matters
- Limited opportunity to move or vary posture during the duty

Why vigilance and fatigue interact
Section titled “Why vigilance and fatigue interact”Performance in vigilance tasks often declines over time even when workers are not performing heavy physical work. Contributing factors include:

Night shifts combine circadian low with vigilance demand — a common risk profile in rail control, utilities monitoring, and healthcare observation roles.
Controls that may support vigilance
Section titled “Controls that may support vigilance”Organisations should select controls through fatigue risk assessment — proportionate to task demand:
- Breaks during shifts — achievable in practice, not only on paper
- Task rotation — varying duties where operationally safe
- Environmental design — lighting and temperature that support alertness
- Roster timing — placing highest-demand vigilance when alertness is likely higher
- Reporting routes — workers can flag unsustainable monitoring loads

Links to human factors and governance
Section titled “Links to human factors and governance”Vigilance fatigue is a human factors issue: task design, environment, and schedule interact. It is not solved by telling monitors to concentrate harder.
Safety-critical work may need more structured fatigue governance in some sectors — but controls should be assessed in context, not copied from unrelated industries.
Common misunderstanding

Cognitive vigilance can be strongly affected by circadian timing, monotony, and long unbroken duties. Physical lightness does not mean low fatigue risk.
