Fatigue management for maintenance work
Maintenance work — plant shutdowns, network outages, asset servicing, and infrastructure renewals — often runs in fixed windows with night shifts, emergent tasks, and pressure to return equipment to service. Fatigue risk combines schedule strain with task demand and vigilance requirements.

Why maintenance is fatigue-intensive

- Work scheduled in a fixed timeframe with completion pressure
- Emergent issues discovered during planned work — extending the window
- Night shifts when equipment demand is low
- Mix of routine procedural tasks and diagnostic problem-solving
- Environmental conditions that may not be optimal
- Safety- and time-critical consequences if work is rushed
Maintenance fatigue is not only about hours — it includes whether workers can sustain attention through isolations, testing, and reinstatement steps.
Planned windows vs reactive work

Night, weekend and blockade maintenance

Handover, supervision and vigilance

- Structured handover time
- Task rotation where safe
- Supervisors empowered to escalate
- Breaks during shifts achievable in practice
